Aghkilisa monastery is located several kilometers from the Lanjanist village of Ararat region. It is a medieval monastery built in 1301. The locals say that the church was destroyed by the treasure hunters.

Aghkilisa has a very interesting origin. It means white monastery (Agh: white, kilisa: monastery). Previously there was a village surrounding the monastery which had the same name.

The monastery is at the edge of a canyon and is surrounded by high mountains and rocks.

On the right side of the Monastery is Aghunik`s (Dove) hole, which is 15 m deep. The hole has earned this name over the years from the locals because of the doves that used to live there.

Close to the monastery, there is a great water source as well. It is surrounded by rosehip bushes, wild apple trees and a poplar tree. Long ago, my dad planted the poplar.Currently the structure of the monastery is in a very poor condition. The Monastery’s ruins dating back to 12th and 13th centuries is completely destroyed.
